Superfood Smoothie: Spirulina Coconut Smoothie

Plant based protein? Check. Iron? Check. Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin B? Check, check, check!

Not only is Spirulina jam packed with the macro and micro nutrients above, it is also super rich in chlorophyll (the green pigment involved in photosynthesis), beta-carotene (converted in the body to Vitamin A, amazing for our immune systems and skin health) and the fatty acid GLA (an anti inflammatory essential fat).

A member of the micro algae family (one of the earliest life forms on the planet - take that Paleo diet), Spirulina is high in antioxidants, has anti inflammatory properties and is very easy on the digestive system.

Spirulina does have an interesting taste (!) so use sparingly (I use 1/2-1 teaspoon per serving) and pair with warm, sweet, earthy flavors as in the recipe below.

Spirulina Coconut Smoothie

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 scoop vanilla vegan protein powder
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1 teaspoon coconut butter
  • 1 teaspoon flaxseed
  • 1/2 teaspoon spirulina
  • 1 handful kale (fresh or frozen)
  • Ice

Blend all ingredients until smooth. Drink immediately.
