Classic Kale Salad with Green Goddess Dressing

This week's Meatfree Monday recipe comes to us courtesy of Sakara Life's 10 Day Reset program!

I recommend to all my clients to eat 7-9 servings of low GI fruits and veggies a day, and one way to make this more enjoyable is to whip up some delicious salad dressings that make eating veggies feel like a treat rather than a chore!

By eating fat with our green leafies we ensure the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K are bioavailable to the body, using citrus or an acid breaks down the fibres in the green making them easier to digest, and the addition of herbs aids detoxification and boosts nutrient density

Classic Kale Salad with Green Goddess Dressing

For the salad

  • 4 cups kale leaves, de-stemmed and roughly chopped

  • 1/2 avocado

  • 1/3 chickpeas

  • 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds

  • 1/2 cup radish, thinly sliced

For the dressing

  • 1/2 shallot, diced

  • 1 clove garlic, mined

  • 2 teaspoons rice vinegar

  • 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 2 teaspoons lime juice

  • 6 basil leaves

  • 6 mint leaves

  • 8 sprigs cilantro

  • 1/2 avocado

Place the kale leaves in a large bowl and set to one side.

Make the dressing by placing all of the ingredients in a blender or food processor and blending until smooth (note – this dressing is so good that I usually make twice as much and use for topping everything, or eating straight from the jar with a spoon).

Dress the kale leaves (I like to do this at least 30 minutes before serving to let the acid and fat soften the kale, making it easier to digest and the nutrients more bio available), then top with the avocado, beans, radish and sunflower seed.

Glowing Summer Skin From The Inside Out!

Glowing summer skin is something we all love to embrace at this time of year, but true luminosity comes from more than just a makeup product we put on in the morning and remove at night. It comes from a healthy body and a calm mind, and here are just some suggestions that can help you create that beautiful radiance from the inside out.

  • Summer is the perfect time to add lightness and brightness to your diet. With the abundance of fresh produce available now is the time to ensure you are getting ample amounts of skin loving antioxidants from brightly colored fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, and apricots.
  • Pair these delicious fruits and vegetables with lighter protein options such as chicken or  oily fish, which contains essential fatty acids which plump skin cells to give a youthful appearance and a beautiful texture.
  • Proper hydration is key in the summer for both health and a healthy glow, and as temperatures soar we need to ensure we up our water intake. Infuse your water with lemon, lime and mint, not only to aid with cleansing our systems but because it tastes delicious too! Also up your intake of high water content foods such as cucumber, celery, watermelon and strawberries
  • Ridding your skin of dead cells is one of the best ways to ensure it glows, and dry skin brushing is my favourite tool for this. Using a body brush work in long sweeps towards the heart, shower (don’t forget to finish with a cold rinse which helps to tighten skin and create even more radiance), then replenish and hydrate with a clean body lotion or oil.
  • A calm, uncluttered mind can be seen from the inside out, and meditation is one of the keys to achieving this relaxed state of mind. Use the long, light evenings to get out into nature and meditate there, even just going for a walk near water or trees and taking in your surroundings can count as meditation.

Do you have any healthy hacks for glowing summer skin? I'd love for you to share them below!

Green Beauty 101 by Splurge Skincare

I invited one of my favorite new green skincare companies Splurge Skincare to give us the lowdown on why green beauty is so important for our holistic health and how we can take small steps to incorporate clean skincare and beauty into our regimes...
Green Your Skincare Routine by Kara Kivi, Splurge Skincare
When most people think about health, nutrition and fitness are the first things that come to mind, but have you ever stopped to think that the personal care products you put on your body may be just as important to your health as the nutrition that you put into it?
 10981727_986305031388898_353808754553916090_n
There are estimates that your skin, which is the largest organ in your body, can absorb up to 60% of what is put on it. For all you skeptics out there, consider the now common method of administering drugs such as birth control, hormone replacement, and nicotine via trans-dermal patches. Trans-dermal application works because your skin is able to absorb the treated patches, and instead of having to go through your digestive system like orally ingested medication, the chemicals are able to penetrate directly into your bloodstream and tissues. However, this means your skin may also be absorbing chemicals contained in the conventional skincare products that you use every day! While there are a variety of factors that contribute to the types of substances your skin can absorb, such as the size of the molecules and the integrity of your skin barrier, it's safe to say that given the sheer number of personal care products we use on a daily basis, we are taking in far more chemicals than we are aware of.

So how do you avoid overloading your body with potentially harmful substances? Your first and best defense is becoming an educated consumer and choosing skincare products that use natural and safe ingredients. In other words, read your labels! If you're unfamiliar with what ingredients to avoid, a great place to start is the EWG Skin Deep database, which rates the safety level of products. You can search Skin Deep by individual ingredients, product type, or brand. However, when searching for brands, keep in mind that smaller, independent skincare companies, such as our own Splurge Skincare, may not yet be included in their brand database. Some tips to remember when reading labels are: ingredients are listed in descending order (you want the good stuff to be near the top of the list)! If you recognize the common name of the ingredient as plant-based (shea butter, for example) it is generally safe, provided there are no known allergies.
It can be overwhelming to replace every single personal care product with a “green” alternative all at once, so we recommend starting with the items that cover large areas of skin and are meant to penetrate, such as moisturizers for both the body and face. There are numerous green beauty options for moisturizers in the form of lotions, butters, and oils.  Our original product, The Rub body scrub is a product that can do double duty as both an exfoliant and a body moisturizer.  Containing a combination of butters and oils with sugar as the exfoliant, The Rub will leave your skin smooth and moisturized using only natural ingredients.  If you're looking for additional moisture, pure coconut oil is a great and inexpensive way to nourish your skin.

Another category of products you should consider replacing with safe alternatives are lip products.  Not only is the skin on your lips sensitive, but you also end up ingesting at least some of the lip products you apply, so it's important to make safe choices.  Splurge Skincare makes a variety of lip products, from our Lip Buttah that provides long lasting moisture, to our Tinted Buttah, for when you want a sheer wash of color, and finally our Melted Buttah, for when your lips (or other spots!) need serious repair.  If you're looking for more color in the form of a lipstick, Axiology and Hush+Dotti are two brands we recommend checking out for great non-toxic lipstick choices.

Consumer demand for both safe AND effective skincare products means that the availability of choices for clean, "green" products is growing at a rapid pace.  From online retailers who specialize in selling only all natural products (The Choosy Chic and Bergamot Beauty are two of our faves!), to natural product choices now available at major retailers such as Sephora, green beauty is indeed here to stay.

All Treats, No Tricks, from Brand I Love, Shamanuti

Beth was one of the first contacts I made when I moved to the area, I was consulting for a health food and supplement store at the time, and Beth came in as a customer. She began to tell me about her organic, locally made skincare range, and kindly gave me some samples to try. I was hooked! As an advocate of organic skincare I'd been disappointed with some of the brands I'd tried in the US as they lacked effectiveness, but the products from Shamanuti were beautifully packaged, smelt great, and made my skin look and feel amazing!

So of course I wanted to feature Shamanuti as one of the Brands I Love, and introduce you all to this wonderful range of face body, hair and make up products in my interview with Beth:

How and why was Shamanuti born?

The simple answer is that I saw a missed opportunity to celebrate and champion native American ingredients and their diversity in the United States.

Natural beauty sits at the intersection of my two greatest interests, science and creativity. I have always studied plants closely and observed that they are important

natural allies in healing. My professional work has been centered in the fine and decorative arts and this meeting point of nature and aesthetics resonated with me. A Shaman is a spiritual guide with expert knowledge of medicinal plants, so in the name Shamanuti, or Shaman + Beauty, what we're conveying is the spirit of beauty through natural healing.

Can you explain in your own words the importance of organic skincare?

Before I got into the field I used skincare products that left my skin stripped and suffocated. Now that I am educated about ingredients I have skin that is hydrated and breathing, and have no risk of toxicity or adrenal failure, not to mention scarring or other disfiguring possibilities which can be associated with some skincare. I'm not trying to cure cancer but I am trying to prevent it and I truly believe using some products can create carcinogenic effects, but that's me. I think I'm backed up by the Environmental Working Group's database, Skin Deep, but obviously everyone has to make his or her own choices about personal care.

One of the reasons I love your products is how well they work. Can you explain why Shamanuti's products are so effective?

A combination of smart formulation and highest quality ingredients. We also use minimal processing in order to employ the purest extraction methods, e.g., no denaturing at all and often cold processing using clay slabs to extract oils and juices in the most gentle way possible. As small batch manufacturers we can create product in this way and it makes all the difference.

How do you find the inspiration for your products? For example, I love your charcoal cleanser, how did that product come into being?

I am inspired by so much in the natural world as well as by some of the few iconic skincare products I have loved. One of these was the Erno Laszlo bar soap made from charcoal and sea mud, that developed a cult following over the years. I recognized how elemental and effective a combination of seaweed and charcoal could be but adapted them to a modern formulation. And all my formulas are inspired by the inherent virtues of original natural ingredients.

What is your personal favorite product/s in the range?

Not a fair question! All are favorites...depends on the needs of the day.

What is coming next from Shamanuti?

Gift bags as well as a Winter Retail Boutique. Our gifting is being organized around ingredient terroir: Ocean, Mountain, Meadow and Forest.

Any tips you can share with us for looking after our skin during these cold New England winters?

I think this is a great article to read as we move into winter.

https://www.yahoo.com/beauty/the-most-common-face-washing-mistakes-women-make-129242650796.html

I also think it's important to use face oil as a supplement for deep replenishment as temperatures drop and to use a slightly heavier moisturizer like our Golden Light Cream. Winter is also

a good time to alternate cleansers with one that's very creamy. We've created an oat and tea-based formula that will be ready in November.

As the seasons change its a great time to switch up your skincare routine, so I've teamed up with Shamanuti to offer my readers a 10% discount on all products available from the website. All you need to do type in the discount code SKINFIT at the checkout (offer vaild Oct. 30- Nov. 13).
